THE FUTURE OF EXTRACTIVES IN KENYA

REFOCUSING THE SECTOR AS A VEHICLE FOR DOMESTIC RESOURCE MOBILISATION, DEBT REDUCTION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Conference Venue: The Boma Hotel, along Red Cross Rd, Bellevue, Off Msa. Road in Nairobi
Dates: 14th – 16th November 2023
Theme: “Towards an Inclusive and Just Governance of the Extractive Sector in Kenya”.

Dear supporter,

“Jukwaa” is back!

“Jukwaa”, Swahili for a platform, fosters discussions among extractive sector stakeholders to enhance its functioning. It took a four-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic and financial constraints.

Friend, in 2023, “Jukwaa la Madini, Mafuta na Gesi” occurred from November 14 to 16. And get this — it coincided with the government’s partial lift of the mining moratorium imposed in 2019.

At the event, people learnt about the challenges facing the mining and oil and gas sector and what we have been doing about them. Also, we showed the moratorium’s impact on the sector’s growth and decoded the intricacies of the oil and gas markets.

Friend, we further shone a spotlight on the not-so-glamorous side: how extractive activities leave women, vulnerable groups, indigenous communities, and minorities in a worse state than they were.

Our key focal points were inclusivity in benefit-sharing agreements and respect for cultural rights, making the forum a must-watch.
